transcript franklin building

two adjoining historic structures located on washington street in the heart of downtown boston were rehabilitated in this $4 million project. the transcript building is a five story structure with granite facade designed and built by gridley bryant in 1873. the franklin building is a six-story structure with cast iron facade designed by peabody and stearns and built in 1874. the 40,000 s.f. area contained five separate buildings or additions on 13 separate levels. historic details were restored or preserved as a new main entrance was established at the juncture of the two buildings, as well as separate retail and office elevators and a dramatic lobby.
